Debunking Myths About Your Brain

About Tessa

Tessa Forshaw, PhD, is the Faculty Chair of the Workplace and Workforce Learning and Faculty Director of the Workforce Learning and Artificial Intelligence Initiative at The Harvard Graduate School of Education. She studies the cognitive and creative skills humans need to learn, work, and create alongside AI.

Before joining HGSE, Tessa was a Lecturer at Stanford’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (the d.school) and spent more than a decade working across Accenture, the IDEO CoLab, and People Rocket, driving innovation and future thinking in organisational learning and future workforce design.

She is the author of Innovation-ish (Wiley, 2025) and a recipient of a Fast Company Design Award, and two Core77 Design Awards. She holds an M.A. from Stanford University, a B.A. (Honours) from the Australian National University, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Creativity and Cognition: How the brain generates ideas, navigates ambiguity, holds contradictions, and overcomes innovation hesitation. The role of Mindsets and metacognition in creative problem-solving.

Learning and Transfer: How adults encode, retain, and deploy knowledge into novel situations. Why effortful learning beats enjoyable learning. The neurobiological prerequisites for learning, creativity, and adaptation. How the conditions and features of environments, contexts, and relationships enhance or halt them.

Minds and Machines: What happens to human cognition alongside AI. The Metacognition Paradox. The AI Coaching Catch-22. Intelligence augmentation. Productive friction

Work is more complex, more ambiguous, and moving faster than ever. Organisations are spending billions trying to build adaptive, creative, capable workforces. Almost none of that investment is informed by the science of how people actually learn, work, and create. Tessa closes this gap.
